Studios, Mentorships and Overall Reflections on Last Year

So, reflecting on the past year at university, it has been quite a wild ride. Juggling work and normal life alongside my studies, this is the hardest I’ve ever worked. The LIAF project really took it out of me, mentally and physically. Although I am proud of what I achieved, I wanted to take what I learned in that project forward and try to care for myself and my practise better in the upcoming projects. Ultimately, losing sleep and negatively impacting ones health for an animated film just isn’t worth it, and I would say this to any other artist, but I need to practise what I preach!

One thing I can say from the LIAF project is that I don’t see myself as aiming for directing roles anytime soon. I think that before taking on this kind of responsibility again, it would do me well to gain more experience in animation and team roles beforehand. It has however made me intrigued by production roles. The organisational part of LIAF felt like a bit of a safe haven for me; communicating with my teammates and attending meetings with the technical team. I would love to look into applying for production assistant roles this year when keeping an eye out for internships.

“The work of animation producer mostly involves management and control over expenses, animation team and time of production, not the real execution of creative tasks. However, an animation producer may have a little knowledge of animation art, as it is vital to understand all the essential aspects of the implementation process. Without a certain extent of awareness, he/she would not be able to supervise the work of animation artists.”

INTERNSHIPS

Below are a number of studios that I am aware have internships on offer at various points during the year. I have listed the information for the ones that specify an internship schedule, but I know that some of these studios post if and when they have the position open, and offer speculative applications instead.

Hey Abbie! Yayyy so glad to hear you’re applying! It’s an amazing place to work. I think my top tips would be that they’re very project focused, so try and show full projects over short clips in a reel (e.g. link to a website or Instagram instead of just sending a showreel). They’re also really into people who want to learn and try new things and develop skills. So mentioning that you’re excited to learn xyz or have taught yourself certain things and all that is a great way to get them interested!
